What kind of flash do you use and with what camera? I've been shooting a bit with a Mamiya RZ67 and I want to start using flash but I have no idea how it works on older/film cameras compared to the more or less plug-n-play of digital. Any reading you could recommend on the subject as well?
I use a nikon sb900, which has lots of customization whatever options, synced up with a PC cable. I used it with an RB67 when I had one, and it definitely worked. Really it will work with anything with an X sync shutter option. As long as your not messing with an older camera’s hot shoe, you can probably use any old flash you want. I don’t know exactly why, but some older flashes can damage newer digital cameras via the hot shoe, but I don’t know if the opposite is true (old camera/new flash). The RZ should definitely have a PC sync terminal. I’m not sure where reading material would be concerning older cameras and flash stuff, maybe check through strobist if you can stomach that mess, other wise, I’d just throw a flash on PC sync cord and see if it works.
how do you shoot with film at shows? I never get good results. Any tips?
I use a flash programmed to match the ISO of the film, or what I want the film to be rated. Lets say I set the flash to 800iso and select the f/stop I want to shoot. I use these settings on my camera to get proper exposure. Each venue is different though, so a bright/white painted place will change what I set my camera to. Same with a dark place. It just takes experimenting.
